Dental Implants

Dental implants are a permanent and appealing solution to replace missing or extracted teeth. They are better than other
alternatives, such as bridges, because no additional teeth need to be altered to place the implant.

The entire implant process is performed over the course of a few months. The first part of the process is to install the implant itself, in which a titanium screw is placed into the jaw bone.  In order to insert the implant, an incision is made in the gum.  After the implant is placed, the gums are sutured.  In some cases, multiple implants can be placed at once.

An implant must be allowed approximately 3-6 months to heal, and during this time the jaw bone will form around the implant in a process called osseointegration. During this healing time you can have a temporary crown installed so that you can eat and speak normally and maintain a proper esthetic appearance.

After the implant has healed, an abutment is placed on the implant to serve as the base for the new crown/tooth. Then, an impression of the abutment is taken and used to create your permanent crown.  The crown will be made by a dental lab, after which your dentist will place your new crown.

There will be a short period of time getting used to the feel of the implant.  After that, it will begin to feel just like one of your natural teeth.
