A dental bridge is one of several options to replace missing teeth. A bridge uses your existing teeth to span (bridge) over an area where a tooth is missing. A bridge can be made from gold, metal, alloys, or porcelain to ensure that it is strong and durable. Some of these options are more esthetic than others.
How is a dental bridge made? The process of creating and installing a bridge is typically a two-visit process. Dr. Firlik begins by creating abutments where the bridge will be attached: the existing teeth are contoured to provide a base for the bridge. After the abutments have been shaped, an impression is taken of the area and sent to a dental lab. From that impression, the lab creates a model used to design a bridge that will fit properly and feel as similar to your natural teeth as possible. The bridge, therefore, will consist of two crowns placed on the abutments and a "pontic" in the middle which becomes a new tooth that replaces the missing tooth. Temporary Bridges Dr. Firlik will fit you with a temporary bridge as you wait for the lab to create your permanent bridge. The temporary bridge will serve to protect the abutments and the exposed gum areas. It also is an esthetically appealing prosthetic until you receive your new bridge. When the permanent bridge is ready, you would return to our office to set the bridge. It will be placed on the abutments and dr. Firlik will use an adhesive to permanently set the bridge. It might take a little time for you to adjust to the bridge, but after a few days it should feel like you have your own teeth back again. You will be encouraged to eat soft foods for the first few days after having your bridge placed; after that, you will be able to resume eating whatever you wish. Importance of Having a Missing Tooth Replaced If you are missing a tooth, you should strongly consider having it replaced. Beside a concern for appearance, a missing tooth can cause structural changes to the upper and lower arches of your mouth, and make it difficult to eat or speak properly.
