Many people have never heard of an inlay or onlay tooth restoration. Dr. Firlik is specially experienced with this alternative tooth restoration and can discuss with you how one of these restorative options is a good fit for your smile.
SO, WHEN ARE INLAY OR ONLAY OPTIONS THE BEST CHOICE? You are likely familiar with dental fillings as a standard restoration to repair teeth. Sometimes there are situations, however, in which a cavity can be either too large for a filling or too small for a crown. This is when either an inlay or onlay becomes the best option. These restorations are sometimes referred to as indirect restorations. Ordinarily, restorations of this kind require just two visits to Firlik Family Dentistry. Advantages of Inlays and Onlays: There are quite a few benefits to inlay or onlay restoration:
What Does the Procedure for Inlays & Onlays Involve? Dr. Firlik will recommend an inlay or onlay to match the contour of any teeth that need restoring. At your first appointment, Dr. Firlik will give a local anesthetic so you will feel comfortable and without pain. She will remove any decayed tooth structure from the tooth being restored and take an impression of your tooth to be sent to the lab, which will create the inlay or onlay. Dental labs make tooth restorations look and fit incredible! Because the lab will need two weeks to create your restoration, you will be fitted with a temporary restoration to allow you to eat and function normally until the inlay or onlay is prepared. During your second appointment, Dr. Firlik will again introduce a local anesthetic to make your visit comfortable. After she is satisfied with the color-match and shape of your restoration, your temporary restoration will be removed. She then will proceed to assess the edges of your restoration to ensure a perfect fit. If everything looks good, she will bond the restoration permanently to your tooth. Your bite will be examined to make certain the inlay or onlay fits properly against your opposing teeth. (If you have ever had something as thin as a piece of paper between your opposing teeth (your bite) and you bite down on it, you can feel it. It can be uncomfortable or hurt. This is why a thorough and caring cosmetic dentist like Dr. Firlik is important to you.) Once bonded and your bite has been examined, the restoration will be polished, and you can be on your way. Dr. Firlik is ready to help you restore your teeth with the benefits of either inlays or onlays to enhance your smile. To request an appointment, call Firlik Family Dentistry at (616) 361-0603. |
